Lab 00: Set up your environment

Complete these steps before Lab 01. If you are using a hosted lab environment, this may already be done for you.

Workshop scenario

Throughout these labs you will work as a member of the HR department at Mayfield Bank Berhad, a mid-sized Malaysian commercial bank headquartered in Kuala Lumpur. Your team is preparing an internal AI Usage Guideline, a policy document that explains how staff should and should not use Microsoft 365 Copilot at work.

The same scenario runs across all 8 labs, taking the guideline from research all the way through to monitoring. Each lab also includes an Independent Exercise with a separate Mayfield Bank context so you can practice applying the same skills to a different task.

Licence requirement

You need an active Microsoft 365 Copilot licence to complete all labs.

  1. Sign in at https://microsoft365.com with your work or school account. Do not use a personal Microsoft account.
  2. Open Copilot Chat at https://m365.cloud.microsoft/chat.
  3. Check whether the Work and Web grounding toggle is visible near the top of the interface. If it appears, your licence is active.

Note: Available features vary by licence type. If you have Copilot Chat only (without the full Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on), some app-level features such as Copilot in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint may be limited or unavailable. Check with your trainer before the session begins.

Apps required

Ensure the following are installed and updated to the latest Microsoft 365 version:

  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint (Microsoft 365 versions)
  • Microsoft Edge (recommended browser)
  • Access to Microsoft Forms and SharePoint Online

Data privacy reminder

For all hands-on prompts in these labs, use the invented Mayfield Bank scenarios provided. Do not enter real employee data, real customer data, IC numbers, salary details, or any personal information during class.

Sample files

Your trainer will provide sample files where needed. Save all files to your OneDrive > Documents folder before starting the relevant lab. Copilot works best with files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, not on your local desktop.
